Bluegrass Saturday Night a “Smashing” success ..literally!

April 7th, 2008

The premiere of bluegrass saturday night was a huge success.  Banjo Jims was filled to capacity as four great bands performed till the late hours of Saturday Night.  The Family Eversol Band took the floor at around 7:30 pm.  If you have wanted to hear straight ahead , hard driving bluegrass, than The Family Eversol delivered.  For a solid hour, Eversol played a greatest hits repetoire of Bluegrass Standards.  Next up was Vincent Cross and Good Company.  I have had the good fortune to hear Vincent on many occassions.  Tonight, Vincent and his hard driving crew were in perfect form.  Vincent is able to sing in the traditional high lonesome sound of the great Bill Monroe.  You should definately catch Vincent when you can.  Next up was the debut of Kings County Strings with Brad Einhorn, Kari Denis, Matt Check and a new Bass Man in the bluegrass scene.  The place was really jumping at this point and Kings County put everyone in a great mood.  The final band of the night was All Night Cookin.  Comprised of Jake Tilove on Mandolin and Vocals, Jon Fletcher on Banjo, Christian Andersen on Guitar and Vocals, and David Roger Grossman on Bass and Vocals, they ripped the place apart.  Cookin is a very high energy band, and that certainly was emphasized by the smashing of Christians guitar ala Pete Towshend late in the set.  Fortunately, he had another and picked all night long.

The next Bluegrass Saturday Night is set for the first Saturday in May.  Check the Calendar for updates.

Roots Music Featured in the New York Times

February 29th, 2008

As mentioned on the home page , a great article by Nate Chinen is in Friday’s New York Times.  Covering the Roots & Bluegrass resurgence in NYC, the article takes us through the vibrant scene all around the city.  Not surprisingly, Michael Daves is one of the featured artists in the article.  NYCBluegrass.com is also mentioned as a valuable resource for finding out what is playing all around town.

Welcome Owen Hatt, the newest member of the NYC Bluegrass scene

February 24th, 2008
On Thursday, February 21, 2008, Owen David Hatt arrived, slightly earlier than expected at the NYU Medical Center. At 19:48:30 PM ET, he burst onto the scene curious to know what everything was all about. His mother, Michelle Virginia Worley Hatt found great resources of strength in bringing Owen into the world. Two days later, at 21:30 PM ET, the newly minted family left the hospital and headed across the Brooklyn Bridge and home.

Five Deadly Venoms prove deadly at The Living Room

October 17th, 2007

The New York bluegrass scene surprises many who don’t know of it.  Most of the attention over the last few decades has been spent focused on indie rock bands and the venues they play in.  Quietly, the bluegrass scene in New York has grown.  The scene is home to many established players including Chris Thile, Michael Daves and Mark O’Connor.   The Five Deadly Venoms, a new and adventurous bluegrass band is making its mark in New York, and they proved that New York is hungry for their music when they performed last week at the Living Room on Ludlow.  All the members of this group have made their mark and grown in other bands in and around New York.  Finding eachother, they are producing some of the most refreshing sounds in the bluegrass scene in years.  Elio Schiavo, lead vocalist and mandolin player brings a smokey sound to established standards.  His original songs harken back to great bluegrass artists such as Flatt & Scruggs and Jimmy Martin but also have a modern flair.  Rick Snell, the tallest man in bluegrass, can flat pick with the best of them.  The band is rounded out with the solid playing of Rob Hecht on Fiddle, Ian Riggs on Bass and James Kerr on Dobro.  Bluegrass bands sprout up all too often in this city, but The Five Deadly Venoms is one to be reckoned with.
